Using GPS and GIS in Project-Based Learning Environment
Presented by Lynn Lary
Lynn gave a great inftroduction to Google Earth, a free tool that allows you to view places on the earth and see layers of data superimposed on a map. Google Earth is available at:
http://earth.google.com/
Participants spent time zooming in on the hotel location, their own neighborhoods or schools. The software allows a variety of questions to be answered by looking at different kinds of data.

Participants also used the Kangis K12 GIS web site for student data mapping.

After the break participants explored the ArcExplorer GIS software, examining local earthquake data from the government. Lynn's Virtual Training Center web site has a great deal of information on GIS resources including tools, training information, lessons and data sources. Check it out at:

Great job, Lynn!

Lynn had a great presentation on the uses for Google Earth, which I had used, and the GIS software, which I had not used. She was able to give enough information to keep more proficient users engaged and at the same time keep the emerging users from being overwhelmed.
