Using GPS and GIS in Project-Based Learning Environment

Presented by Lynn Lary

Lynn gave a great inftroduction to Google Earth, a free tool that allows you to view places on the earth and see layers of data superimposed on a map. Google Earth is available at:

http://earth.google.com/

Participants spent time zooming in on the hotel location, their own neighborhoods or schools. The software allows a variety of questions to be answered by looking at different kinds of data.

Click on the GIS, GPS and/or PBL link for more info...

Participants also used the Kangis K12 GIS web site for student data mapping.

After the break participants explored the ArcExplorer GIS software, examining local earthquake data from the government. Lynn's Virtual Training Center web site has a great deal of information on GIS resources including tools, training information, lessons and data sources. Check it out at:

Great job, Lynn!

Where are you from?

Tell us where you are from! We will be using this data in the GIS workshop on Monday and Tuesday. Believe it or not, but you (yes YOU!) will show up in Google Earth. Click and be counted!

Geocaching on Monday?

Wondering what we will doing during Monday's afternoon Geocaching session? How will it be different than Sunday evening? Let's just say, Sunday is "talkin' the talk" and Monday is "walkin' the walk." On Monday (from 2:30-4:30) you'll have the opportunity to check out a GPS, learn how to use it, and go out on one (or more!) Geocaches. We will be looking at these nearby caches:
