"Grass Born to Be Stepped On" on the Apple website is a nine minute video created by four middle school girls. The assignment was on social women's rights in 19th-20th century China. The educator's open-ended directions allowed for creativity in the final project. The technology, collaborative, research, and writing skills were incredible. Also, their abilty to storytell and enhanced the quality and impact of the film.

In this project middle school students took a story they read and created a silent movie based on that story. They watched old silent movies to understand the genre and incorporated those movie elements into their movie project.
Students created a storyboard to plan which scenes to be filmed and what type of appropriate titles needed to be displayed in their movie.
The film was edited in iMovie and appropriate music was selected to create the mood for the film.
The value of this project is that it gives students the opportunity to show their understanding of literary elements (character, plot, theme, mood) in a creative and engaging process.
This project covers both NETS 1 & 6.

This project was a podcast from a 5th grade Social Studies class on the American Revolution. This was an interdisciplinary project involving speaking, reading, writing, social studies, technology, cooperation/teamwork, attention to detail, and patience. This was connected NETS 1 a & b as well as NETS 6, b & d. Connections to Frameworks for 21st century: demonstration of originality; and some creativity (the interview).

ROW is a collection of excercises and projects from around the world with themes. Students can see how different cultures do things and approach thing. The value is that it opens a whole new world in creativity, innovation and how technology is a vehicule to showcase this creativity. It also showcases how diversity creates inovation and creativity. ROW is an "intersection"!!

Secret Life of Bees is a book study where the students posted to class blog using several different categories (themes, symbols, chapter summaries, art, etc). The book helped the students explore historical issues around racism, civil rights, child abuse, growing up, and loss. The value of using a blog to explore issues is giving students a non-threatening environment to explore ideas, express themselves, and respond to their peers. It also gives the teacher deeper insight into students' understanding of the themes and issues explored in the book. The blog provides an environment that allows students to take their time expressing reflection and deeper thought than is possible during a class discussion. The blog provides individual accountability to the assignment. STudents know their work will be read by their peers, the author (in this case) and their teacher.
We think this project was most closely aligned with NETS Standard #2 - Communication and Collaboration. It is also aligned with Standard #6 - Technology Operations and Concepts.
The teacher set up the parameters of what students were expected to do, how they should interact , and the categories of blog postings. He also modeled appropriate response patterns. The teacher also provided a variety of ways for students to express themselves and synthesize information.
