The Cadre meeting met my expectations. Good advice for PD, cool tools to leverage instruction, and some good strategies. Nice to meet you all. I look forward to continuing. Most of you seem way ahead of me, but I hope to contribute.

Cook Your Own
Based on your level of technical experience, you have the following tasks:
(1) Toast: Set up and use your Google Notebook.
(2) Appliance Savvy: above and?
visit Google Labs; learn something new, teach it to someone else and blog about it on the PDC blog.
(3) Iron Chef: both of the above and?
visit the MIT Media Lab and Extreme Tech sites; learn something new, teach it to someone else, and blog about it on the PDC blog.
Google Notebook
Will we be able to use Google Notebook in schools? This becomes an issue around email accounts, especially for districts that do not allow students to use email.
Notebook is very useful for personal use and research.
Also very useful for teacher-teacher and teacher teams. ex., If two professionals are collaborating on a project this is a useful tool. Can send information, URLs, etc.
A teacher could set up a notebook and allow access to students to use it.
Wondering about the need to pay for articles in the Google Labs section.
google Web Site creator looks interesting!

Google Accessible Search 3/27/
Very cool option for our visually impared students! I was interested in how it works- what does Google use to identify or qualify sites as helpful for visually impared? Thus, I searched for some key terms and checked out the results.
I copied the text from teh FAQ page as well!
Here is the link as well: http://labs.google.com/accessible/
Eva
Accessible Search FAQ
What is Google Accessible Search?
Accessible Search is an early Google Labs product designed to identify and prioritize search results that are more easily usable by blind and visually impaired users. Regular Google search helps you find a set of documents that is most relevant to your tasks. Accessible Search goes one step further by helping you find the most accessible pages in that result set.
How does Accessible Search work?
In its current version, Google Accessible Search looks at a number of signals by examining the HTML markup found on a web page. It tends to favor pages that degrade gracefully --- pages with few visual distractions and pages that are likely to render well with images turned off. Google Accessible Search is built on Google Co-op's technology, which improves search results based on specialized interests.

All Google All the Time
Some of my favorite Google tools include Google Transit, which works in conjunction with TriMet so you can plan trips and get maps and Picasa, which is a fabulous photo management tool that is very similar to iPhoto. Viewing photos and slideshows is easy with Picasa.

SMART Board Resource
A very helpful resource supporting SMART Board users can be found at:
The 'pd' in the URL stands for 'professional development'. The site delivers podcasts featuring two Canadian teachers who review educational tools/websites and then demonstrate one or two SMART Board lessons (also provided on the site) they've created.
They're up to 40 casts so far.
Good stuff!

Joe Augsburger

I'm with a small district near Crater Lake NP (Days Creek SD) where I teach middle school math and science as well as high school computer science, Aplus certification, and network/pc maintenance. Enjoying the tech conference! The picture I uploaded is from a lecture I gave two years ago at a large university in mainland China. I really noticed some differences in availability of technology between my district and even this 20,000 plus student university!

Sharing resources
If we could share our staff development resources, such as handouts, movie files, and other media used to explain how to use an application or integrate an element of technology into the classroom, we could focus on the Best Practices part of staff development, not the skills-based parts.
It seems that a lot of us are spending time creating tutorials and other materials pertaining to new programs and forms of integration. If we share out our own resources and can pull from the resources created by others, we could use our time more effectively. I am game to help create a basic page where we can categorize our tutorials, organize them and make the materials downloadable.
Ideas? Thoughts?

I help trouble shoot hardware and software issues before the IT guys are brought in for help. I have been teaching for 13 years and am amazed at the new technologies we see in the educactional world today. Students have the opprotunity to experience the real world while investigating the world through technological means. What a combination to have! I also have the opportunity to share new technologies with the teachers in my building and offer support with lessons, integration, and applications.

Hello, my name is Connie Eastburn. I have been part of this incredible profession for the past 32 years. I have spent the past 30 years in Mapleton School District and have had the privilege of teaching all grades K-12 (except 5th grade). This is the first year I have not had my own classroom. In now serve as Elementary Principal, Title Coordinator, and Project Director of our second EdTech Competitive Grant project. It is an exciting time to be an educator in a small, rural district that is attempting to level the playing field for attending students and providing them experiences that will lead to success in the ever-changing world.

Not much has changed in the past year. I continue to work for Salem-Keizer Public Schools as a member of the Onsite team from TIS. IWeb is Apple's new web page creation tool. It is easy to use and pretty straight forward for publishing. You can publish your Garageband created Podcast, iMovie created movies and other media directly into iWeb. It comes out looking quite professional.

Brian Hawkins
I am a TOSA for Curriculum and Instruction in Technology for the Forest Grove School District. The job is still in the process of being defined, but I have been doing training in the use of eSIS among our K-4 teachers, GradeQuick for our 5-12 teachers, Edline for our 9-12 teachers, and SuccessMaker for our K-4 teachers. It is my hope that I can begin to visit classrooms to demonstrate effective use of our technolog including the new latop carts at each of the K-4 schools.
Currently, I provide training in eSIS and Moodle to all of the teachers in our district as well as administrators and office personnel. This training and support is both in-person as well as virtual. The staff make use of the documents that I have created to perform various tasks. In addition, they use the FAQ web page that I have posted. Another method of providing training is through the use of training videos that are posted on the web in the form of Flash files. These allow teachers to listen to directions and then perform the task before the training video moves on to the next set of directions.

Making Music
"Kids can learn the basics in fifteen minutes and quickly start making their own music. Hyperscore supports a range of tasks from simple melody- or rhythm-making to composing complex pieces. Activities can be designed as a one-hour workshop, multiple-session workshops or classes, or even as an entire semester or year plan."
This Windows program was developed by the folks at the MIT Media Lab. Today, you can download the program from the H-Lounge. This is one of three tools developed as a part of the Toy Symphony project. Toy Symphony was featured on Scientific American (there are a variety of resources at this site, including the original broadcast).
A case study on the use of this program is available online in several for-pay databases. Or download from the author for free. :-)

I was hoping by telling some of these "stories" to our faculty, I could get them thinking about - and discussing with each other - the world our students are entering. To get them to really think about what our students are going to need to be successful in the 21st century, and then how that might impact what they do in their classrooms. It would also help the faculty that are not currently participating in my staff development join the conversation.

I am a 7th grade Language arts/social studies teacher at Chehalem Valley Middle School in Newberg. My goals last year with my students were to: have a classroom blog, create a wiki, and do some podcasting this spring. My students were very successful at all of the projects, but podcasting was their favorite project.
Our district offered our teachers a tech integration class last Spring to continue our Summer Institute class. We will do the same again this year.
My goal this year is to have my students get involved in an International project. We will be working on the Chris Craft PBwiki project. My students will create an Imovie about their life round here.

Scratch
Not the solution to an itch, but rather an innovative way to help children learn about programming. Scratch "is a new programmable toolkit that enables kids to create their own games, animated stories, and interactive art -- and share their creations with one another over the Net" and has been funded by NSF. You can learn more about Scratch by reading some of the publications that have been written about it.

Parking Lot Strategy
Overview
This activity is designed to deal with questions that pop up during meetings/trainings that need to be put "on hold" to be discussed at the end of the session.
Goal
To ensure questions aren't forgotten and can be put on hold to be dealt with later. To help focus the participant to the task at hand.
Procedure
- Get a clean sheet of flip chart paper or whiteboard and label it "Parking Lot".
- If there are any questions asked by participants that are relevant, or almost relevant, to the topic but which may take too long to answer, or derail the conversation, ask the questioner to put their question on the Parking Lot. (another strategy is to provide post it notes for the participants to write on at anytime they have a question, and stick it to the Parking Lot.) This will ensure that it won't be forgotten and can be addressed at the end.
- Have participants post questions to the Parking Lot.
- If questions are put on the Parking Lot, try to ensure there is enough time to deal with them at the end of the session, or that participants are directed to where answers can be found. (Ofton the question is answered later in the session).
Materials Required
Flip chart or whiteboard
Pens
Post-It Notes
