Insomnia Film Festival

Calling all high school and college filmmakers. The Insomnia Film Festival is back—and while the world sleeps, you could be making film history.

On Saturday, October 13 at 9:00 a.m. (Eastern time), we’ll post a top-secret list of elements — special props, dialogue, settings — you get the idea. Choose any three to include in your movie. Then all you and your team have to do is write, cast, shoot, edit, score, and upload your 3-minute masterpiece within 24 hours. No problem, right?

Once the films are in, your friends, family, and adoring fans will be able to watch them online and rate their favorites. The 25 entries with the highest rating on November 9 at 12:00 a.m. EST will be screened by industry professionals, including Barry Sonnenfeld, James Mangold, and Nora Ephron.

If your film is the biggest hit with either the public or the pros, each member of your team will receive a MacBook Pro, Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, and Shake so you can get started on that first sequel. How’s that for a Hollywood ending?

Ginny Ryan

I'm a fourth grade teacher at Scott Elementary in Salem-Keizer. Last January I became a member of the new Salem-Keizer Cadre. It's been exciting and fun! I already had a SMARTBoard in my room, and I've really appreciated the training I've had since joining the cadre. I'm learning to use my CPS system with Examview. I'm also testing a document camera, and I'll soon purchase one. What an exciting time to be in teaching!DSCN0001.JPG

kSolo & Web 2.0

What we learned:

Ksolo is a tool that could be used in varied curriculum areas. Social
studies and language arts are two curriculum areas where students could
compose songs relating to history or readings assigned in language arts.
Different areas of the lesson could be weighted for creativity, content,
collaborative efforts. This is a perfect tool for a project-based
learning activity.

We chose to "rewrite" the words to the Beattles classic, "Yesterday" to demonstrate our committment to professional collaboration.

Does not allow for instructor based filtering

Advantages:
Fun
Engaging
Content based
Collabrative
A rich, interactive, user-friendly interface

SiteKreator

After having explored SiteKreator, our group of Roadrunners experienced marginal success with the program. The interface is clunky and not always intuitive. An example is when you click on Edit, you do not get to edit already created text - instead, you have to click on the T or Properties to view and edit the existing text. You are not able to change font type or color of text either.

Those of us with Windows machines were able to upload pictures while those with Macs were unable to do so. After much trial and error, it was discovered that MACs can upload pictures by inserting a image rather than media. This program allowed the uploading of a SWF file, but the file would not run in the page. After some research, we discovered that SiteKreator does not allow mp3 files to be uploaded.

An interview of the exploration team can be found at the follwing URL can be found by clicking on the following link interview.

Here is the same audio interview with our thoughts about SiteKreator that has been embedded into the blog. This embedded file acts like an mp3 player.

Here is an example of a site that was created by the Roadrunner group.

Another example

Final example

In our opinion, the communication and collaboration that we want to foster through SiteKreator can be accomplished more easily using Google docs and Spreadsheets, Google web or Blogger.

Greetings!

I teach technology classes at Ackerman Middle School in Canby, Oregon.

I use projects to teach my students, with very little handouts or tests.

I do have a blog that I keep current activites posted, which you can find at:

http://blogs.canby.k12.or.us/greenlew/blog

One school-wide project I am overseeing is a Virtual Museum of our community.

We are building a television studio adjoining my classroom for video casts and local access programming.

I'm also doing my third year of Lego Robotics.

Lots of fun!

Leslie Golden EESC Tech Director

LG at the Cadre.jpg

I am well into my second year as the Education Technology Director for the EESC, which is a statewide partnership between ODE, the association of ESDs, K12, Higher Ed, CC, and the Governor's office.

I work on a range of technology programs and projects geared to support and advance effective uses of technology in education. The continuum includes last mile connectivity solutions, improving data quality to improve teaching and learning, building public/private relationships to leverage support for instructional tech opportunities, and exploring content and models for Web-based professional development.

By working with the expertise in the Cadre and other groups/agencies across Oregon and the U.S., I hope to be able to bring vehicles to create true education equity to teachers and students across Oregon.

My time came.....and went.

I was feeling old and alone,
I stopped my heart and fell to the ground to die,
The angles and those around me did not like what they saw.
Some special people touched my heart,
I felt their message,
Life returned, I start anew....

With the help of Lynn Lary, a fellow teacher and I have acquired SMARTBoards and are using them on a daily basis. I am excited to learn more and help my students be well prepared for the future.

Paul Nelson - Linux guy - NWRESD

paul_nelsonsm.jpgI was a teacher and tech coordinator for the Riverdale School District for a long time but now I'm a tech specialist at the NWRESD and I'm loving it out here. It's great to meet all the folks in the schools we serve and see the good things they are doing for their students.

I spent many years showing schools cool things they can do with Linux, but now I'm having fun learning to use a new Mac and introducing schools to blogging and Moodle. In my spare time I'm developing digital photography courses and working on taking great sailboat racing photos at PhotoBoat.us.

Michael Witnauer

I am originally from Buffalo, NY and followed a winding, scenic route thathas brought me to Prineville and the Crook county School District. I used to be an geologist in the environmental consulting industry, but needed a change. After moving to Prineville I took a job with the technology department at the school district in 2000. Recently I completed my masters of teacher education degree from EOU, just in time to take a job coordinating a new 1:1 laptop program at the middle school. IT will be a challenging next few years to bring our staff and students the technology and skills they will need for the 21st century. Someday I hope to teach science, but for now I have a skill set that is much needed for this program.

On a personal level, I love the outdoors. Rafting, camping, and snowbarding are just a few of the ways I spend my time communing with nature. My wife and I live on 50 acres just outside of Prineville and enjoy beutiful sunsets over the Cascade Mountains. For a look at what we look at, this is my personal website www.rock-n-rose.net. I haven't updated the site recently bu there are still many pictures.

Rachelle Krause-Campbell

Hi! I am new to the cadre this year (2007-8) and am looking forward to being a member of a terrific team in the Siuslaw School District, striving to bring technology and all it benefits into the classroom. It will be exciting to create our district's platform and plan, and then later helping others learn and incorporate those.

I teach mathematics at the high school, teaching a range from Algebra I to Algebra II. I love encouraging and challenging students to extend themselves - push themselves to new accomplishments. I coach middle school cross-country and will also coach middle school track & field this year. Hobbies - outdoor "stuff", crafts, reading...photos

Todd Hamilton

IMG_1132.jpgTodd Hamilton is Director of Technology and Literacy for the innovative South Lane School District (Cottage Grove, Oregon). Todd’s unique position supports his belief that the tightly woven elements of curriculum, technology, and leadership are essential to the success of each student.

Todd’s initial curiosity in education began nearly two decades ago, at a purely emotional level. “I was working as a camp counselor in Vermont, primarily because of my love for backpacking and other outdoor pursuits. I’d never been to camp as a kid, and I’d never really encountered a teacher who was truly inspiring,” he remembers. “So when I saw what leadership and innovative teaching could do for each kid, it really made an impression.”

After completing his studies at the University of Oregon, receiving his MAT at Pacific University, and teaching in elementary schools in Hermiston, Oregon and Eugene, Oregon, Todd looked to have greater impact. “What I found was that I was really having more influence on kids by teaching teachers.”

Since, Todd has shared his passions in the Eugene School District as Curriculum and Staff Development Specialist, Instructional Technology Specialist, and Project Director for the 4J Handheld Integration Project. He has presented at local and national conferences on assorted topics related to curriculum, instructional technology, and leadership.

Todd lives in Eugene with his wife and their 5-year-old daughter. Todd loves to spend time outdoors with his family, an unruly Pomapoo named Pip, and a magnificent mutt named Maggie. He declines to comment on the latest pet rat.

Nancy Warrington

I am the first full-time Literacy Coach in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Our district is committed to integrating technology into our Literacy Plan, so I am here. I was a Technology Teacher and Mentor in the San Francisco Bay Area for 16 years. My husband and I also owned and ran a summer school business which used technology at every level.

I have a 15 year old son and an eight year old daughter. One lives in the left and the other lives in the right brain. Our lives are full of swim and track meets, skiing trips, evenings at Lake of the Woods, dance presentations, concerts, etc. My husband is the IT Manager at a local structural engineering firm, which has opened three new offices since he started with them. We met sailing on the San Francisco Bay.

Too much technology?

I often wonder if we sacrifice 'real' experiential relationships for these virtual worlds of modern technology. Yet students are living in their techno world and we must adapt and provide adequate ethical foundations for emerging social networks.

Hey There!

Jeff Linman from Milwaukie High School here. This is my first year in the Ed Tech Cadre and I am REALLY looking forward to it.

I am a Science Teacher (Chemistry and Physics)along with the Advisor for MHS Tech Cadre (www.techcadre.com) a Student-run Enterprise focusing on Web Design AND Pulse Media Productions (www.puslemediaproductions.com) a Student-run Enterprise focusing on Video Production.

For me, moving into the 21st century is SIMPLE....just GO! It is all about kids having a purpose. They can figure out how to use the technology to meet someone's needs (they always do :-)). It is Philisophical in nature.....don't hold students back, continually encourage them to use what they know to meet someone's need and HELP THEM!

I am blessed to work with kids that live this model daily........

Looking forward to working with all of you..........

Getting this out to staff is a huge barrier. How can we develop a list of proven, slick, easy ways to use all these amazing tools in a one stop shopping center?

I am a technology teacher at North Marion Middle School in Aurora, Oregon. I work with sixth through eighth graders. Some say I'm crazy for working with this age group, but I disagree. I have worked with kindergarten through junior college levels. Give me the middle schoolers. They are challenging, but fun!

Did You Know?

What do we think it means to prepare students for the 21st century?-We need to teach them more than how to use technology devices, but how to use them with problem solving skills.
-Have all students learn at least one other language beside English.
-They need to know how to use technical devices for a variety of occupations, not just computers.
-Come up with a way to teach students that’s safe, but not restrictive.

What skills do our students need to survive and thrive in the 21st Century?

Collaboration/Teamwork – bring back that group work and provide students with strategies for group work. Make it okay for kids to state what their needs are during different situations. Help them realize what they need to work on and give them strategies for compensating.

Second, third, fourth languages!

Skills for 21st Century Students

Prepare them for the unknown
Work with groups,leadership skills
Teach them to adapt, thinking critically and creatively.
Emphasize critical thinking skills.
How to do this?

Change the perspective of the way we think about "things."
Make students aware of what a diverse world we live in.

What is still being taught? Facts

Using the technology appropriately.

Grading the process instead of the final result?

Preparing for the 21st Century

Community is key. We need to teach students to understand how communities work and how they can contribute.

Working with teachers to really understand what is important about a lesson and what they want the students to walk away with. It's not about the technology.

Need to be asking students to work as a community to come up with solutions and generating questions rather that it all coming from the teacher.

Communication is key. Students need to be able to communicate with each other and be problem solvers. Communities can change, and students need to understand that.

I am glad I teach first grade and we use technology. People say they are too young and they don't get it. I teach what I teach and I'm glad.

Urgency!!!!

The community trust isn't there yet. You got the computers. The parents resist. I don't want my kids on the Internet. Many applications are blocked. People don't trust or embrace the technology.

Need to do more faster - rather - we need to do more better. It's not about the teaching, it's about the learning. Teachers need to be using the tools better with their learners.

When I look upon my own learning - I need to be ready for it. Ask teachers what their goal for their students might be. Then, demonstrate how the technology might help them meet their goals.

It's not just seeing the need, it is seeing how it is used. Get the teachers past their fears.

Want to increase the excitement about technology while still meeting our goals.

Kids learning how to communicate.

Prepare Students

1. We need to convince our communities to support education. Community Resources are imperative to keep up with technology.
2. Time - we need to dedicate time to allow students and teachers to learn how to use technology to develop critical thinking skills
3. As educators, we need to encourage our students to think outside the box and use cutting edge rather than insisting on right answers using archaic technology
4. Use of technology should be seamless, so attention is placed on problem solving and higher level thinking
5. We need to eliminate the disparity in access to technology across the country
6. Students need to know how to find information and to apply it. They need skills that apply to everything we do. We need to teach our kids to evaluate information and use it in any situation.

Group in the Center of the Room

Our responsibility is to be sure that teachers and students have the resources,(or know how to find them) and know how to use them ethically.

Ethical appropriateness needs to be taught from a very young age and needs to be taught not just assumed.

Should we be going clockwise at this table?

To prepare the kids, are we teaching them how to accomplish a task and for what purpose? We need to help them learn the question, which is so more important then just "using" the technology.

Are we really serving children by just giving them a computer. What about the hierarchy of needs that comes before technology? Addressing poverty and social emotional needs.

We and our students think inside a box. We need to teach them how to think differently and creatively not just the standard responses to assignments.

A lot of the research is pointing to the fact that if it can be done by a computer it will be done by a computer. So we need to embrace the net standards. Creativity cannot be programmed into a computer. So we must look at creativity and innovation or a computer will be doing their job.

Students need to know the purpose of an activity or lesson and not just look at the tools available.

PURPOSE seems to be the key to growth.

Students need to learn how to sift through the volumes of information but they need to be filtered by purpose and relevance. They need to be taught how to be their own media source through effective critical thinking skills.

We are back to ground one - "we are below ground one."

How do teach ethics and remove the barriers so that students can access what they need for a purpose and not just waste critical teaching and learning time.

How to Prepare Students for the 21st Century

Teach students how to learn and quickly. Use long distance ed.

Need to create in students an attitude that the knowlegde and skills they need will be continually changing.

Also teach them confidence to learn and do new things.

Students need to be able to connect what they know to new information coming out.

Students need to know how to learn, not just do. And learn what they to know what they don't know. And not be afraid of it.

Skills:

Students need to think outside the box.

Collaboration

The need to see the whole picture and not just one solution.

Creativity

Flexibility

Front and Center

Students need to be problem solvers, be able to use a variety of technological devices to communicate, outside of the box thinking, using their personal devices at home and in the school/work environment. Using technology beyond entertainment purposes. Teach cross-platform uses so students are ready for what ever platform they are confronted with. Have core base of students with great work ethics, perseverance, flexible so they're able to adapt.

Teaching employability skills, how to interview, can you communicate with others?, with or without tech., making sure they have strong work ethic. Students must be adaptable. Help students see and be aware of the possibilities for future endeavors.

Did You Know Discussion

Preparing students for the 21st Century means helping them think creatively and openly using technology.

Literacy with technology? How are they using technology to communicate with other schools and the world?

70% of all 4 year olds have actually used a computer.

We are training students for jobs that don't exist and we don't even know what problems there will be to solve. The number of students graduating from China and India exceeds that of the US. How are we to remain competitive?

I think we need to be teaching students broader skills instead of a set of information. Learning and communication skills are more important. Need to also remember to teach kids "real" skills in addition to the virtual skills. Are the virtual world skills valid and "real." Questioning, from a cultural standpoint, the validity of the virtual world.

How are we teaching responsible use of these new technologies if we are banning the use from our schools?

Are we providing college courses for those students who have these technology interests. Are we preparing teachers? Should we re-instate classes in ethics?

How are we teaching students to deal with the permanence of the internet? Ethics...

Interesting that India's graduates all speak English. Surprised at reaction to the students getting laptops before even getting textbooks. What will they do with this knowledge?

Authenticity of what we are creating on the web. Are people being authentic with themselves, is information authentic existing on the net.

The economic future of our country

A harder shift in not just the infusion of technology, it's more the project based, collaborative way to process content. It's not regurgitation anymore, you have to ask the right questions. Students need to understand problem solving process, the procedure, to be able to solve those unknown problems of the future.

3 people sitting at out table have been at their current jobs for less than years.

Did You Know Table Reflections

What do we think it means to prepare students for the 21ts century?

  • If students are going to have 10-14 careers by the time they are 38, then we have go to start teaching skills and not just content.
  • We still need some content, but we have to integrate those skills and strategies.
  • We need to provide opportunities by teaching concepts that can apply to other areas.
  • We need to shift away form hardwae/software. We know it will change. We need to teach these kids to be able to pick up new things and use them. Global competition will be a major factor.
  • We need to be critical consumers and think why would we use this, what is our goal, is this just cool or is it useful.
  • Helping students to realize there are a variety of methods and paths to create a finished product. Let them and teach them to make those choices.
What skills do students need to survive and thrive in this new era?
  • They need to learn to work collaboratively.
  • They need to know how to plan, set a goal, find resources and support, take necessary steps.
  • They need effective communication skills. They should be indentifying their audience. It could be the world.
  • Web 2.0 and social networking allow students to communicate and collaborate regardless of location.
  • We need to teach communication skills beyond text -- visual literacy and auditory literacy are equally important in the digital age.

    Table Discussion from Back

What do we think it means to prepare students for the 21st century? What skills do students need to survive and thrive in this new era?

We can't teach children nuggets of information, we need to be teaching them how to find information.

The problems that we have are motivational in nature. We ignore that children are collaborating and using technology tools. We block the very things that are a part of their life. We don't provide them with learning environments that give them the opportunities that they use all the time in their "real" lives.

Our mindset of teaching needs to change so that we become facilitators of information rather than the imparters of information. They need to have the opportunity to learn from each other. Educators tend to be scared of change. Our students embrace change.

Change is difficult for those who did not grow up with all of the technological resources. It is hard to pick up all the new technologies when we have so many other things to do. We tend to be resistant to change. New staff who have grown up with technology are closer to students and their needs.

Sometimes we just as educators need to get out of our students way. We have to get away from telling to helping them become classroom facilitators. We need to let our students help us learn what will create effective learning environments for them.

It is easy to pick out the symptoms of our problems, but the answers to how to meet the needs of our teachers is a very much bigger problem. The system on a larger scale (ODE) needs to provide more flexibility into the training of our teachers. Teachers have a requirement that they will integrate technology, but many do not know that this requirement exists. They would probably run screaming if they new what the expectations are.

Is there a Myspace issue or is it a general social networking problem. Do we need to block or do we need to teach students how to use these tools appropriately. Students don't have judgement...we need to teach them how to develop the skills to use these tools in the correct way. They do it without understanding the consequences of using them incorrectly (firing, not getting hired, losing scholarships). We need to help them develop these skills.

    21st century skills

*Students need to internalize the SHIFT.
*Kids are creating to demonstrate the SHIFT.
*Students are starving for technology integration, opportunities are not as rich and they are doing it on their own.
*Teachers have to change the way that we're teaching to try to stay abreast with students.
*Students and teachers need to internalize the message.
*SHIFT happens, but struggle happens too. Students still need to learn how to think and problem solve, even though things comes so easily.
*Less interested in teaching them discrete skills and more interested in teaching them essential skills.
*Teaching technology skills is not important as teaching kids connections between themselves and their community and world.
*In an age where people are so connected, there is an increase in isolation. Not communicatively, but emotionally.
*We need to teach them how to communicate on an emotional level.
*Somehow we need to address the issue of lack of emotional connection, through collaboration using technology.
*Service learning has a lot of value that involves them in the community, where the focus is not on the technology.
*Students are not isolated, technology has opened up a different type of connection; A different avenue for communicating that removes social pressures and status issues.

    21st Century Skills

What do we think it means to prepare students for the 21st century? What skills do students need?
Lynn, Skip, Steve, Dan, Tracy, Melissa
*Big 6 skills: have students access, process, and present information
*Need to be flexible and be able to adapt to constant change
*Hard to predict the future and flexibility is key
*Writing and reading are the most important skills for students to communicate in a written format
*Trying to get students to understand what life is like in the workforce
    *Critical thinking, problem-solving
*Should there be standards for communication, writing, reading? Formal writing skills vs. IM texting abbreviations
*Must give students real-life applications to use so they understand why it's important to have formal skills
*Teachers need to adapt their teaching skills to the 21st century
