A Popular Bend Icon
These creators introduced us to the 'Local Mascots' of Bend. They deserve a prize for the hardest business to get to in Bend. We hit two highways and one major road that go around it but had to ask them (via moving vehicles) how to get there. Luckily they gave us a clue, so thank you very much.

Geocrapping

We thought we had arrived at the correct location of our first coordinates, Dutch Bros. However, we were at the WRONG Dutch Bros. Part of the problem was that our GPS unit was not calibrated correctly! Oh well, we learned good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and had a lot of fun as a group.

Historical Tour of Bend
Our group had the opportunity to take a fascinating tour of historical sites in Bend, from the original 1925 Power Dam to the 1927 Kirtsis swim tank, to the Bean Building, built in 1912 in Bend's original downtown area.

Advancement of Bend ~ Solved by On the Edge
This was intended to show a historical perspective of Bend over the years. The early settlement days with the horse, public transportation with the bus, the public library as a repository of all historical artifacts and the TV station as modern disseminator of information. The coordinates were accurate and the On the Edge team completed the Cache in less than an hour.

GPS rocks
This activity was very interesting! Our group closely collaborated and created a GPS activity that included a short walk! The form worked well for structuring the event. Even structuring how the datum was written down helped! I wish we had more time to try out the other GPS activities, but I think that wish for my time applies to so much here!
Tying this activity to a specific content area, such as geography- focus on how man modifies the environment, could work well. This is where I hope we can see all the ideas the other groups came up with!
Our group's focus:
Evaluate how man has altered the environment with the houses and golf course. Focus specifically on the issue of erosion. Our first 3 waypoints explored different forms of erosion and erosion control measures. At each of these waypoints the participants needed to identify the erosion pattern AND at least one way humans have altered the area to best protect against erosion damage. The last stop had a new area of severe erosion. The participants needed to analyze the area for the erosion causes and then create a plan to develop erosion protection in that specific area.

Geocaching
Working with my team was great! We had fun with some of the signs that were found along the trail as we created our trail. I particularly enjoyed the trip to the top of Pilot Butte as we followed the trail created by the poetry group. The view was great! We would have liked to have had the time to join all of the walkers although there was not much room between them, the edge of the road and the cars going up and down. Thanks for a great experience.

Secret Life of Bees is a book study where the students posted to class blog using several different categories (themes, symbols, chapter summaries, art, etc). The book helped the students explore historical issues around racism, civil rights, child abuse, growing up, and loss. The value of using a blog to explore issues is giving students a non-threatening environment to explore ideas, express themselves, and respond to their peers. It also gives the teacher deeper insight into students' understanding of the themes and issues explored in the book. The blog provides an environment that allows students to take their time expressing reflection and deeper thought than is possible during a class discussion. The blog provides individual accountability to the assignment. STudents know their work will be read by their peers, the author (in this case) and their teacher.
We think this project was most closely aligned with NETS Standard #2 - Communication and Collaboration. It is also aligned with Standard #6 - Technology Operations and Concepts.
The teacher set up the parameters of what students were expected to do, how they should interact , and the categories of blog postings. He also modeled appropriate response patterns. The teacher also provided a variety of ways for students to express themselves and synthesize information.
